| Roxy Jam is the first Festival celebrating feminine surfing including one round of the World Championship Tour (WCT), free practices, “Ladys Only” concerts and DJs and a unique art show ‘keep a breast’ by modart.
From May 21 to 29 on the Madrague Beache in Anglet, France, enjoy the rocking and glamourous universe of feminine surfing thanks to the stars of the WCT, “Teenie Wahines” – young talented wannabe female surfers and the sirens of the surf team – longboard and windsurf Roxy. Numerous activities will enable the public to share their passion: pirogue and longboard shows, shortboard Expression Sessions, free surf practices thanks to the “Roxy Learn To Surf Now” and many other events in and out of the water.
For this very girly week, WCT stars Chelsea Georgeson, Sofia Mulanovitch, Layne Beachley, Keala Kenelly, Roxy Pro Director Lisa Andersen, young French wildcard Caroline Sarran, and all the famous names of the Roxy Team – such as surfers and models Veronika Kay and Missy Gibson, the twins windsurf champions Daida and Iballa Ruano Moreno from the Canaries, or longboarder Kassia Meador – will be the charming hostesses of this festival.
For this festival – unique in France – Roxy presents ‘keep a breast’ exhibition by modart. ‘Keep a breast’ is an awareness program promoting Breast Cancer as an issue for younger women. This is a new perspective on the battle against Breast Cancer, one that highlights the defeat able nature of its ugly presence by showcasing the beauty and strength within the female form.”
Surfers and other women volunteers will have breast casts made, which are then painted or decorated by artists from all over the world. The exhibition will run over the 10 days of the Roxy Jam and conclude with a presentation of each breast cast by the roxy girls and live auction. This give guest a unique chance to obtain these one of pieces of art while supporting associations for breast cancer research.
Roxy Jam – Feminine World Championship Tour (WCT)
Girls now have their own WCT event in France. The 4th round of the feminine WCT will take place in Anglet, France, from May 23 to 30, along with the Roxy Jam.
During that waiting period, the top 17 best pro female surfers from the Tour will fight for the Roxy Pro France 2004 title on the spot of La Madrague, Anglet. A mobile structure is also designed in order to move the competition site on another spot if needed.
After Layne Beachley’s 6th title in a row last season, 2004 could very well see the new generation come to power! Chelsea Georgeson, Sofia Mulanovich or Keala Kennelly are ready to take over and set their own style and talent.
European Hope Champion Caroline Sarran will be the only French girl of the event thanks to a wildcard giving her the 18th and last spot for the Roxy Pro France 2004.
The Roxy Pro Jam 2004 is directed by Lisa Andersen, a big name in feminine surfing, icon of the sport and always so feminine. The 4-time world champion will be in charge of directing this round of the feminine WCT. Her challenge is to select the best timing during the waiting period of 8 days assigned by the ASP for this event in order to get the best waves.
Layne Beachley: World Champion 2003
6 titles as World Champion make her the most crowned female surfer in history. Her last title enabled the Australian to equal Kelly Slater, also 6-time world champion on the WCT. The new generation sometimes gave her a hard time in 2003, but Queen Layne once again used wisely her experience to eventually take the victory. Thirty-years-old Layne is now starting this new season with the hope to get a 7th title that would make her reach the pantheon of world surfing.
Chelsea Georgeson
Hardly 20 and already #4, Chelsea Georgeson’s rise in the WCT is dazzling. Voted “Rookie of the Year” by the ASP in 2002, Chelsea is now ranking among the bests of the WCT.
She is one of the main candidates for the title this season and she wouldn’t mind taking over her fellow countrywoman Layne Beachley at the top. Coached by Lisa Andersen herself at the beginning, Chelsea started surfing at age 13, in the turquoise waters of Avalon, Australia (NSW). Highly motivated and putting a lot of efforts in her carrier as a pro surfer, Chelsea’s future is very promising.
Sofia Mulanovich
The sparkling Peruvian, hardly 21, is a real threat for the favorites of the WCT. Sofia has just been voted “Grommet of the Year” by the ASP. This prize rewards the determination as well as the inner qualities of the young South American woman.
Samantha Cornish
Originating from Crescent Head, Australia, 2003 was Sam Cornish’s best season ever on the WCT, with a 5th place thanks to a beautiful victory at the Billabong Pro Maui.
Megan Abubo
The gorgeous Hawaiian managed to stay on the WCT despite a so-so 2003 season. Raised on the shores of Waikiki, surfing came to her very naturally. It soon became a passion for her, but also a means to overcome a rather difficult childhood. Megan is an active member of the International Women’s Surfing Movement, working for the acknowledgement of women in sports in general, and surfing in particular.
Caroline Sarran
The young European Hope champion got the only wildcard of the Roxy Jam and will compete among the very best female surfers on her homespot of Anglet. Even though she started on the neighbouring spot of Cavaliers, her knowledge of La Madrague beach where the WCT event is taking place should bring her enough confidence to stand against the Australians, Hawaiians and other such competitors from the Tour. Rising star of the European surfing scene and representative for the new French generation, Caroline keeps on progressing through her experiences in the European circuit and, of course, with other champions in the Roxy Team – like in the recent Roxy Road Trip in Australia, where she was next to Chelsea Georgeson, Sam Cornish, etc.
Lisa Andersen - Event Director
Lisa Andersen is one of the most charismatic characters in feminine surfing. A pioneer and an outstanding champion in surfing, she left her mark in the sport thanks to her talent and personnality. She impersonates success in sports, as well as personal accomplishment and femininity. With 4 World titles (94, 95, 96 and 97), she now takes a new orientation by directing events. After directing the Roxy Pro Fidji and France in 2003, she takes again this year the delicate and crucial role of director for the Roxy Jam.
Roxy Learn to Surf Now
The idea is simple but great: offering both the experience and the talent of pro surfer girls to beginners who can freely come and discover surfing. In a word, it is girls teaching girls, giving them little tricks and hints as well as specific advice.
It starts with a presentation of the coaches of the day, a teaching of the basics in surfing and safety, and then groups are made according to levels… After putting on the wetsuit, the warmup takes place and then, the first steps in the water. The boards used for the lessons are specific to the initiation. Thanks to Roxy Girls’ wise advice, the beginners will have a unique first experience with water as well as great memories of the best female surfers they met then…
To join in, you have to:
-be a girl
-register at: www.roxy.com
-provide a swimming certificate
The outstanding success of those surfing lessons taking place in a very relaxed and simple way since last year, and managed by champions along with trained instructors, have encouraged Roxy to do it again this year on several shores of France and Europe during a specific Tour.
With the best female surfers in the world gathered in Anglet from May 23 to 30, the Roxy Learn to Surf Now Tour is a great opportunity for a first approach of surfing.

Great Teachers
Veronika Kay
The good-looking Californian grew up near San Diego and took her first wave at age 13. The following year, Veronika took intensive lessons in surfing before and after school. She was heading towards a carrier as amateur surfer when Quiksilver offered her to represent its feminine range Roxy. Her natural gift for surfing along with her spirit and look make her the perfect incarnation of the Roxy Girl as well as the main embassador of the brand.
Missy Gibson
Pretty Missy has been part of the Quiksilver and Roxy surfing family ever since she was 13. Athletic young woman, she also practiced swimming and water-polo at a good level before going into surfing and modeling only for Roxy right before her 20th birthday.
Other Roxy girls ?
Teenie Wahine Contest
They are between 8 and 16 and all share the same passion for surfing. Teenie Wahines are little girls or young women who have had their own event on the Basque Coast for several years already.
Roxy presents this attractive event where young surfers are amazingly at ease in the water. The most skilled already display their own style along with an outstanding technical experience.
Even though they act a bit like their elders, the little sirens still have a mind of their own and their own personal approach of surfing which is a game above all for them. However, just like with the “pros”, the teenies’s sharp competitve spirit give out some great confrontations. Alize Arnaud, [other names], will go in the water under the friendly and expert watch of their prestigious elders.
We can bet those wannabe champions will do their best in front of this choice audience.

How to register?
Shortboard Expression Session
Aside from the demanding and exhausting series of the Tour, the WCT champions will take part along with Roxy Team surfers in the very spectacular Evian Expressions Sessions. Looking to pull it off with the most radical manoeuvre, the competitors are going to try their best to please the judges.
This event usually reveals to the public unknown talents surfers can’t always display under the pressure of the competition. The expression Session is the opportunity for them to share their talent and fancy.
Longboard Expression Session
The longboard is a symbol in itself of the spirit and origins of surfing. This long and heavy board becomes amazingly easy to handle and graceful in the water. Women give the longboard a new and aesthetic dimension sublimated by surfers such as Kassia Meador. For the past 3 years, the beautiful Kassia and her devastating smile has been gathering titles and video makings. She will be Roxy’s longboard charming embassador in Anglet.
Pirogue show
In Tahiti or Hawaii, the pirogue is tightly linked to surfing. First used as a means of transport, island people can also surf waves at amazing speeds with the elegant boat.
Dave Kalama, one of the most prestigious watermen and surfers in Hawaii will be at the Roxy Jam to organize pirogue shows.
“Keep a Breast” by Modart
During the Roxy Jam and for the first time in France, Modart introduces “Keep a Breast”.
Modart principle is to offer a unique means of expression to a large set of local and international artists evolving around surfing or skating. It celebrates beauty and youth through art in order to raise awareness for a major cause: fighting breast cancer.
Modart is a means to raise funds, but it is also an active celebration where hundreds can take part on the Roxy Jam site and during the creative process.
All women, surfers, volunteers and models here for the Roxy Jam will have their bust casted in plastic. This cast will then be used as a medium for French and international artists - painters, designers or photographers, all linked to the world of boardriding and its lifestyle.
Those artists are going to customize the busts and will then expose them during the Roxy Jam, from May 21 to 30.
Beyond its artistical dimension, “Keep a Breast” is a program aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer, a disease affectin young women more and more. It’s a new perspective for the fight against breast cancer and a way to raise awareness while celebrating feminity in its splendor.
Art auction
The casts will be auctionned during a fund raising evening on the site of the exhibit with a musical show and special guests.
The funds raised will be given to associations activly involved in fighting the disease. The guests of the evening will have the opportunity to buy a unique and outstanding piece of art while helping a good cause!
Along with the “Keep a Breast” exhibit, Modart will also set on the Roxy Jam site an independent “creative space” for beginner and skilled painters, acording to a pre-established schedule.
This “White House” will be made of large blank canvas where artists as well as surfers – and also children on Wednesday morning - can express themselves
“Girls Only” Music
A selection of very feminine bands and DJs will also take part in the Roxy Jam 2004.
Among them, don’t miss the following:
DJ Chloé
