I recently announced the European coming of Australian graffiti legend New2, remember? Well, Sunset … Sunrise is showing brand new wood sculptures, finely detailed collages and painted mounted panels by New2. For this exhibition, the artist extracted shapes and symbols from his outdoors graffiti pieces and integrates them into the gallery space, Stoffwechsel in Mannheim. Besides the collages, everything was whipped up in the gallery. Now New2 sent us some pictures from the gallery opening. “We tried to include some side on shots of the collages as I feel as though the front-on shots don’t convey their nature properly. I had fun running around the neighborhood collecting all the wood etc from rubbish piles to build the UFO which is loosely based on a BMW saucer from the 40′s.. (when in Rome!!!) “All my collages are first done as a piece on a wall or wherever. They are then made later, using colored papers. With the above Hitachi, I saw a lot of gold and silver Christmas decorative paper in shops and thought it would look good as a classic Melbourne train instead! The paper works having being built up in layers give a small indication of how I ( or…writers in general) perceive 3d in my ( or our) pieces that we paint on walls as 2d representations.”(New2) With his psychedelic colors and retro sci-fi references, New2 manages to create his own style of letter forms, integrating traditional graffiti skills with all things space. The artist has been active on the streets for 25 years and uses this experience moving into the gallery world with inventive art installations. The show runs until February 25 and is an absolute must see for every graffiti fan.
