Willehad Eilers, better known as Wayne Horse, has a truly unique way of telling a story and a discomforting humor that makes you giggle when you think you shouldn’t. While his recent short movie, The Illmannered Milkman, premiered last year, he decided to follow his intuition and re-edit the whole thing.

It’s a different film now, but the essence remains the same: we follow the infamous Teddy Milks and the ABC kids into the woods, as a fictional story is transformed into a real event through coincidence, ritual and the reflection of opening doors and dodgy decisions.

Wayne Horse sees More Future

This Saturday is not only the grand opening of the brand new Harlan Levey Projects Showroom, but also the exhibition opening of More Future by Willehad Eilers, aka Wayne Horse. In the evening Wayne will also premier his new exciting film ‘The Ill Mannered Milkman’.

While we’re running around to help Wayne and Harlan set up the atmosphere for this eerie show we hope that you come to Brussels to enjoy an evening with the infamous Teddy Milks, rituals, orgies and of course price fighter Kent ‘The Norseman’ Hensley.

About Wayne Horse:
Willehad Eilers aka Wayne Horse (Peine, Germany 1981) is a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld and Rijks Academy in Amsterdam. He first earned attention for street based character designs, which reflected the same sweet, caustic and sharp sense of humor he would become known for in his drawings, paintings, tags, videos, animations, installations, Internet-based works, and home videos. His work has been shown at the Venice Biennial as well as in group shows in Brussels, London, Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Amsterdam, where he has exhibited with artists such as the Chapman Brothers, Jeff Soto, and Abner Preis.

His latest project, ‘The Ill Mannered Milkman,’ is a film, which follows the infamous Teddy Milks and the ABC kids into the woods, as a fictional story is transformed into a real event through coincidence, ritual and the reflection of opening doors and dodgy decisions.

Willehad Eilers, better known as Wayne Horse, is not only a workhorse, but a genius with a truly unique way of telling a story and a humor that never seizes to amaze me. His latest project, The Ill Mannered Milkman, is a film, which follows the infamous Teddy Milks and the ABC kids into the woods, as a fictional story is transformed into a real event through coincidence, ritual and the reflection of opening doors and dodgy decisions.

As Harlan Levey describes it: “You start by making something. This something is not defined. It has a beginning and then it develops. One day this something is made. You look at it and have a sort of one-way conversation. You understand the thing, might even give it a name and then you begin to understand the history of your actions in reverse.

“If you’re a guy like Willehad, who is constantly making things, over time it becomes natural for links to appear as all this stuff develops character. These are accidental connections that appear after the fact. Willehad looked back at the stories, which had been written by works he created for other reasons and used them for plot and character development, hijacking their appearances to create an environment where the stories can safely collide and fracture into the hands of non-actors, who create a real story on film.

“It is not the same as working with a final objective or telling a story that comes to an end, but about using narrative to draw the audience into your thoughts; an orchestrated version of improvisation; a skillful manipulation of emotion and boundary similar to those illustrated by the other three artists. The film provided the location for all those other things to finally come to life. In it’s own story, the film deals with cultural issues such as reality TV and ‘next best’ culture, with old boy’s networks and fraternity and faith.”

Upcoming Saturday The Ill Mannered Milkman will be premiering at the newly opened HLP showroom in Brussels, together with new work from Wayne in the exhibition More Future.

Kate Moss and HLP Mousse

Two weeks ago HLP protege Willehad Eilers, a.k.a. Wayne Horse, opened his group show at Paradise Row in London, alongside the likes of the Chapman Brothers. Wayne presented his “lighter-lit display of sub-cultural, cul-de-sacs articulated in a trash aesthetic”.

We know who Kate Moss turned up to see (even if she didn’t) and were proud of the HLP crew on hand and to know that they rapped the wine drinkers right out of the room and into the night …

Wayne’s Rijk

Last Saturday the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam opened its doors for the public. Attracting thousands of visitors each year, the open studios weekend has become the most celebrated presentation of the creme de la creme of young artistic talent in the Netherlands.

Our friend and hero Wayne Horse is one of the talented international artists, who are honored with a residency at the Rijksakademie and he wouldn’t be the incredible Wayne, if he didn’t have something very special planned for his visitors.

The center piece of his presentation was a wooden hut wherein Wayne showcased the orgy-scene from his most recent movie. The studio was completely darkened and the spectators had to grab a lighter at the entrance to feel their way to the hut, where they had to peep through holes to see the scene. Thereby creating an intimate and shameful atmosphere that seems to encompass Wayne’s work.
The orgy-scene is the heart of Wayne’s current project, which is still in post-production, but planned to be premiered early next year. Wayne tells me that the goal of the movie was the process, rather than the final product, which is why he spun the whole movie around that one disturbing orgy-scene.

Naturally our master of intimacy and shame sang the soundtrack to his movie himself. We’ll keep you posted.
