Mr.Ego

COOL ATTITUDE SHOPPING AT MR EGO

MR EGO is a pop-culture shopping destination with a friendly vibe in downtown Brussels, not to be missed.
It’s a place to let down your guard while wandering around its large 400m2 loft like space with high ceilings, filled with easy to wear clothing for both sexes. Let the soft tunes hum gently in your ears while trying on clothes at your leisure.
DJ’s mix in the store on Saturdays. Dropping by on a Saturday afternoon is the ideal way to warm yourself up between your late night on Friday and your upcoming Saturday night social activities… which we all know are good and pure!!
We are just around the corner from the legendary concert hall AB, and regularly have famous acts coming by after their sound check and before their show to pick out something to wear. Pretty cool!
We have plenty of brands for men and women, from your long time favourites to new indie ones to be discovered. Click ‘COLLECTIONS’ to see our loooong list.
And be sure to visit our new WEBSHOP (link) selling hard-to-find selected items only.

THE MR EGO CROWD

We are happy, soulful, and dynamic people. We are colourful guys and girls, friendly women and men, skaters and athletes, DJs and artists, nerds and geeks, and much more. MR EGO is a place where you will find yourself bumping into friends, colleages, and even your ex lover(s). So put on your happy face and take your chances!!

NO NEW ENEMIES AND MR EGO

NO NEW ENEMIES (NNE) is an international network of artists, designers and creative thinkers, which started as a structure to support independent art and the expression of freedom.
MR EGO and NNE work together to bring you Belgium’s local talents and international artists.
NNE had its own space in MR EGO for several years, and NNE will soon open its own store in downtown Brussels. Check their website (http://www.nonewenemies.net) for more information.
No one better than co-founder of NNE, Harlan Levey, could explain to you how the interaction came across:

“One day I was walking past the Mr. Ego and the manager was having a smoke outside. She was pretty cute and we had a chat. Boring as I can be, I started to talk about the acid tag somebody had left on the store window. She told me they were going to replace the whole window and I offered a much cheaper solution. For a few hundred euro (paint, train ticket, etc) and a great of beer, I’d help my friend Chaz of The London Police put up some images to make acid look like art.
The store liked our spirit and offered itself as a venue for whatever we’d like to do. So we did a live painting there back in 2005 and the relationship continued to grow. What I liked most was that there was no concept … there was just a guy in retail who was as naive as we were and didn’t feel satisfied by selling clothes … he wanted to give something to his community that didn’t have a brand attached to it. A year after that and we build a box inside the shop where we could exhibit art and shield it from commercial advertising. Back then we worked where we could, which was usually on the streets. Mr. Ego offered us a space where we could surprise people and provide artists a different condition for working, thinking and communicating.
Over 4 years we held nearly 20 shows there, drank more than 400 bottles of Pernod (thanks Sabine!) and welcomed a lot of amazing talent to Brussels as we tried to color the dark heart of Europe with a bit more love and a lot less apathy.”

FROM UNDER ELVIS TO MR EGO

When we opened in November 2003, our upstairs neighbour was Brussels head-dresser icon Elvis Pompillio, notorious in Belgium since the 80’s for his stylish hats.
We brainstormed for a name with our favourite being UNDER ELVIS. After all, why not welcome him as our neighbour and continue to carry the torch of Brussels city downtown culture with his name
Mr. Pompillio wasn’t at all happy with our thoughts so perhaps we should have shared our idea before opening. Our mistake. We settled in court and changed the name… to MR EGO.

THE REST IS HISTORY
All this to say see you soon and happy shopping!
