Fierce for One Night Only

Tonight, and only tonight, THIS los angeles and Monster Children magazine host Fierce, a solo exhibition featuring original works by Australian graffiti and street artist Anthony Lister. Lister’s tireless approach to living is an unrelenting approach to art. His name and imagery are on street corners worldwide, accessing a massive audience by way of stickers, aerosol paint and all manner of markers.

Lister’s paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pull from his experiences as a youth in Australia and as a father of two. Superheroes, skateboarding, graffiti, Australian gangster celebrities, television, jail birds, tattoos, the internet, pop and advertising resurface in his art practice. Rendered in acrylic and spraypaint, the wood panels feature Lister’s iconic superheroes as well as rare self-portraits: In one painting, a messy-haired Lister stands with his arms crossed in front of a finished graffiti piece, and in another, he uses a roller to paint one of his giant street murals.

Fierce debuted this past December during Art Basel at a pop-up gallery space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. The exhibition will make a special one-night appearance in Los Angeles at THIS los angeles in Highland Park, and works on view include 11 wood panels, five large canvases and more than two-dozen masks.
