Art on Snow Festival 2013 – a complete success!
One week full of snow, ice, color and a lot of art. Last Friday this year’s Art on Snow ended. Since 2nd of February the Gasteinertal in Austria, especially Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein transformed to a small art metropolis and the biggest art festival in the Alps with references to winter sports with artists from all over Europe.
With the Marker Battle powered by PAINT CLUB – an international network of illustrators, graphic designers comic and street artists in Middle and Eastern Europe – on Saturday the 2nd of February 2013 the Art on Snow Festival made a great start in the following week and made to feel like more. 12 artists competed each against each other and painted a 1×1 meter big canvas with only three marker colors in the qualifying round. The top six, who’s transposed the theme of “Casino Royal” best, had to create a design for a snowboard in vertical format and the theme of “Snow Queen” in the semi final. Finally the best three fighted against in the final and proved their painting skills on a horizontal snowboard in “Wild Western” style. Lion Fleischmann convinced the judges with his creativity and picked up the first prize and € 500. The second Tom Lohner from Loslohbros and third Brittney Bodner received € 300 and € 200. The fourth, fifth and sixth placed might paint one gondola of the Fulseckbahn in Dorfgastein.
This was the next big program point of the Art on snow an Sunday the 3th of February. With markers the three artists transformed the inner sides of three cabins into a canvas.
Outside in snow it went on in the course of art. Over the whole week two teams of ice sculptors created some spectacular and filigree snow sculptures at different location in Gasteinertal. One of the teams is named “Schneebild” existing of Frank Bergmann, Sebastian Müller and Martin Maurer. With just a few tools like scrapers and a chainsaw they made unbelievable creations for example the Snow faces at the Schlossalm, the beaver at the thermal bath and the huge building block creations at the Hotel Palace in Bad Hofgastein. Someof these buildings were produced in cooperation with the second team “SubZERO”. This newly founded label of Markus Kösel and Daniel Rauch from South Germany represent not only objective and surreal oil- and acrylic paintings, but also collaborative artistic concepts and projects where they use different kind of materials and media like snow, video, photo etc.
Beside the art works of snow ice sculptures were also created. The creative Alex Neumayer was chef at 5 star hotels in Asia and the US for years and founded his own company “Kochen&Kunst”. He won international competitions for his work in fruit & vegetable carving. He not only works with food but also with ice and put his talent to prove at the Art on Snow.
But it was not only worked in snow. From Tuesday to Thursday at three different locations three artists from France and Germany created in the project “Big Picture” each three works of art in live painting actions. The finished works were represented at the Big Bang Finissage and displayed their actual effect.
But not only the big artists but also the plebeians were creative. Both large and small, young and old, everybody had the chance to do the first steps into the world of painting. The German artist Eva Kusche offered painting workshops from 3th till 7th, February. Every day in another hotel she introduced all interested visitors in the giant world of painting, colors, techniques and more. So allot of people took the opportunity and aroused their artistic side. The interested party had to imagine how to express “noise & still” in red, blue, white and black.
Core of the event was the brilliant exhibition in the Casino in Bad Gastein where great artists like Christian Kreisel, S-Fly, Caroline Pepe or Lennart Rieder and many more presented their art. Every day from afternoon to evening visitors had the possibility to look at the art works, talk with the artist and also buy the works. Although it was known that it is difficult to attract interest for urban art in the country the response was surprisingly large and many and the target those people to bring this kind of art closer was successful.
All works of art created where gather together at the “Big Bang” Finissage on the last day of the Art on Snow Festival in Bad Hofgastein. There all artists and visitors could admire all the works of art which were created during the festival once again.
At the end one’s can say that it was a very successful Art on Snow. All the artists had a lot of fun and got on well with each other and most of the artists have even connected with each other. This was a good breeding ground for future cooperation. The Response from visitors was very positive, in particular the Paint Club Marker Battle and the Big Picture project were a complete success. The snow and ice sculptures have addressed also philistines.
Those who have not visited this year’s art on snow should do it the next year. You can expect a full program and new artists.
